Novak Djokovic kicked off his Shanghai Rolex Masters campaign with a one-sided thrashing of Martin Klizan.

The world No 1 won the China Open in Beijing last week and his quest for back-to-back Chinese titles got off to the ideal start.

He dropped just three games in two sets as he easily dispatched the world No 44 6-2 6-1 in the second round.

Djokovic roared into an unassailable lead by taking the first four games until Klizan made the first-set score-line more respectable.

Klizan then avoided a bagel in the second set but holding his serve while trailing 5-0 but couldn't prevent Djokovic serving out the match to progress into the last 16.

Ivo Karlovic made sure Rafa Nadal had to work a lot harder than the world No 1.

Nadal eventually won through 7-5 6-7(4) 7-6(4) after two hours and 43 minutes of a closely-fought encounter.

The Croat, however, refused to give up, prevailing in the second set tie-break to force the decider, which again went to the wire before the Spaniard claimed victory.

Fourth seed Stan Wawrinka was also on the winning trail, beating Viktor Troicki 7-6 6-3 while fifth seed Tomas Berdych beat Jack Sock 7-6 4-6 6-4.

Kei Nishikori, the sixth seed, defeated Nick Kyrgios 1-6 6-4 6-4 and Bernard Tomic won 6-4 6-2 against seventh seed David Ferrer.
