Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal remain on course to meet in the final of the ATP 500 Basel after both came through three-set quarter-finals on Friday.

Top-seed Federer overcame mid-match service problems to beat David Goffin 6-3 3-6 6-1 on Friday and set up a clash with Jack Sock.

Spanish third seed Nadal dropped the opening set in his match and was broken in the second, but produced a typically spirited response to complete a 4-6 6-3 6-3 victory over Marin Cilic.

Federer is seeking a seventh title in Basel and cruised through the first set in a repeat of last year's final but then unexpectedly dropped two straight service games, allowing Goffin to level the match.

But the Belgian was blown away in the final set after Federer had seized the initiative with an early break.

Earlier on, Nadal was left fuming after a disputed line call gave Cilic two set points which he duly accepted, but he then took out his frustrations on the former US Open champion to set-up a semi-final with Richard Gasquet.

A wayward forehand from Nadal left him trailing 5-4 in the opener and he complained bitterly to the umpire after his call allowed Cilic to serve out for a one-set lead.

The Croat then claimed another early break in the second set, but Nadal hit back to level at 2-2 and his thumping groundstrokes forced another break for a decisive 5-3 lead.

After capturing the second set, the world No 7 forged 2-0 ahead with a further break in the third and stubbornly held onto his own service games.

Nadal would secure his progress with a further break as Cilic sent his backhand volley wide and greeted his victory with a trademark fist pump.

Earlier in the day, the 14-time Grand Slam title winner had revealed he will partner Leander Paes, the star Indian doubles player, at the ATP Paris Masters.

Gasquet booked his place in the last four after finally getting past Ivo Karlovic in three sets.

The Frenchman dropped the second set on a tie-breaker, but gained the measure of the big-serving Croat as he sealed a 6-4 6-7 7-6 win.

Sock also advanced after a 5-7 6-4 6-2 win over fellow American Donald Young.
