Aljaz Bedene has lost in the first round of the Rio Open to Fabio Fognini in straight sets.
The British No 2 failed to make it through to the second round of the tournament in Brazil as his Italian foe ran out 7-5 6-3 winner.
The Slovenian-born Bedene was narrowly edged out of the opening set by world No 24 Fognini but ran out of steam in the second set.
The Rio Open's surface of clay favoured Fognini, who lost in last year's final to David Ferrer.
