Heather Watson has reached the second round in Indian Wells, but fellow British player Kyle Edmund lost his opening match in the men's tournament.
British No 2 Watson completed a 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 6-1 win over Galina Voskoboeva in the BNP Paribas Open, just a few days after winning the Monterrey Open.
Edmund could not follow her into the second stage as he suffered a 6-7 (7-3) 6-4 7-5 defeat to Guido Pella in the hard court competition.
After missing last week's Davis Cup tie with a back injury, the British No 3 could have served out the match in the decisive set, but Pella claimed two breaks while reeling off four games in a row.
Watson also looked in danger of an early exit when her Kazakh opponent levelled the match, but she quickly opened a 2-0 in the third and wrapped up victory in just under two-and-a-half hours.
"When it was important I was able to bring out my best tennis," said Watson. "Today I was a bit slow getting used to the court. It was a bit different (to the Monterrey Open)."
