Katie Swan has failed in her bid to play in the Miami Open after losing in the final qualifying round.

The 16-year-old, originally from Bristol but now based in the United States, secured her best result in the professional ranks by beating world No 102 Lauren Davis in the opening round of qualifying in Key Biscayne on Monday.

But she was unable to repeat the feat against 109th-ranked Samantha Crawford, missing out on a place in the main draw after losing 6-2 4-6 6-2 to her American opponent.

Swan, ranked 521st, gave another encouraging performance but struggled with a thigh problem in the deciding set and lost the last four games.

James Ward also fell in the final qualifying round, losing 6-3 6-3 to American Bjorn Fratangelo, as did Naomi Broady.

Broady was Britain's last hope in qualifying but she also succumbed, losing 6-4 6-2 to Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus.
