Heather Watson will play in the Madrid Open despite losing in the final round of the qualifying tournament along with Naomi Broady.

Watson was beaten 7-6 6-2 by Croatia's Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, who made the most of a series of mistakes at vital times from the British No 2.

But the withdrawal of Yulia Putintseva from the main draw will give Watson a chance to compete in the clay-court tournament, where she will take on Daria Gavrilova in the first round.

Broady, not completely at home on clay. made a good start against Puerto Rico's Monica Puig but could not maintain her momentum after winning the first set.

Puig, ranked 63 in the world, rallied and eventually progressed to the main draw 3-6 6-3 6-3 where she will face Sabine Lisicki.
