Former Wimbledon champion Mario Bartoli says she is suffering from a mystery virus which has left her fearing for her life.

Bartoli was withdrawn from playing in an invitational event at Wimbledon this week after doctors expressed concern for her health.

The Frenchwoman has suffered dramatic weight loss and claims she can only eat organic salad leaves and peeled cucumbers because he body rejects other food.

"I fear for my life, I'm afraid one day my heart will stop," the 31-year-old told ITV.

"My life is a living nightmare. I don't wish this on anyone but it is gradually getting worse. I am wasting away and I don't know why."

Bartoli, who retired from tennis 40 days after winning Wimbledon in 2013, said doctors do not have a name for the virus which she believed at first was down to jet lag.

She has lost around five stone since defeating Sabine Lisicki in straight sets in the final three years ago and as the illness has worsened, she has become so sensitive she washes with mineral water and wears gloves to dial numbers on her mobile phone.
