British No 1 Johanna Konta has withdrawn from the Dubai Duty Free Championships because of an injury to her left foot.

The 25-year-old had last week helped Great Britain's Fed Cup team qualify for the World Group II play-offs by winning the Euro/Africa Zone Group I in Estonia.

However, after travelling to Dubai for the WTA Tour event, where world No 10 Konta was set to be the sixth seed, the British player was forced to pull out due to fitness problems.

"I am really sorry to have to withdraw from Dubai. I came here with every intention of playing and I'm really sad I didn't get to make my debut here, but health has to come first and it's a long season," Konta said in a statement from the tournament organisers.

"I am really looking to coming back next year and for many years to come.
