Andy Murray will face Bernard Tomic at the Barcelona Open, while Kyle Edmund was beaten by world No 9 Dominic Thiem and Dan Evans beat Mischa Zverev.
In the top half of the draw, Tomic set up a second-round encounter with world No 1 Murray by seeing off the maverick talents of Germany's Dustin Brown.
A thrilling three-set contest saw both men find a string of winners, before Tomic clinched the win with a 7-5 4-6 6-2 triumph.
It means the Australian will face Murray for a fifth time having lost the four previous encounters without winning a set.
Murray accepted a wild card over the weekend after his early defeat in Monte Carlo and will face Tomic on Wednesday, on the courts where he made his professional debut more than 10 years ago.
He played and lost his first professional match as a 17-year-old at the tournament in 2005, losing to Jan Hernych, and he will hope to build on the success he had on the clay courts last year.
Murray won the Rome Masters having reached the final in Madrid and the semi-final in Monte Carlo in 2016 and he has work to do after his third-round defeat to Albert Ramos-Vinolas, a possible quarter-final opponent this week, in the Principality last week.
The news for the other Brits began in disappointing fashion as Edmund went down 6-1 6-4 to Thiem.
The British No 2 had been in impressive form to beat Jeremy Chardy on Monday, but he was no match for the Austrian.
Edmund made a slow start and never recovered, winning just one game in the opening set and, while he improved in the second, Thiem was able to seal his third-round spot with a straight sets victory in 1hr and 20mins.
Up next for Thiem is another Brit, as Dan Evans produced a fine display to beat world no 35 Mischa Zverev.
The British No 3 followed up his win over Thiago Monteiro with a 6-4 6-4 success over Zverev to reach the third round where he will face Thiem in a rematch of their first ever meeting in Sydney earlier this year.
Evans won in three sets in the last eight on that occassion on his way to a first ever ATP level final and he underlined his return to form with a fine display in Barcelona
France's Richard Gasquet was the first big name to tumble out, losing in three sets to Japan's Yuichi Sugita who fought back from a set down to beat the No 9 seed 4-6 6-3 7-6.
Other winners on Tuesday included eighth seed Alexander Zverev, who came through a three-set battle with Spain's Nicolas Almagro.
Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff and Georgia's Nikoloz Basilashvili were also victorious in the first round matches, Struff will faces Spanish sixth seed Roberto Bautista Agut after an impressive 7-5 6-3 win over Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
Basilashvili will face Monte Carlo semi-finalist David Goffin having dropped just four games in a 6-3 6-1 win over Japan's Taro Daniel.
