Novak Djokovic reached the Rome Masters quarter-finals with a 6-4 6-4 victory over Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut.

Djokovic, beaten in the final by Britain's Andy Murray last year, will now face either Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro or Japanese seventh seed Kei Nishikori.

Alexander Zverev, the youngest player ranked in the ATP's top 50, emphasised his burgeoning credentials on clay ahead of Roland Garros later this month by seeing off the challenge of Italian home favourite Fabio Fognini 6-3 6-3 at Foro Italico.

Fognini, who failed once again to make it past the third round of his home tournament, had defeated British world No 1 Andy Murray on Tuesday evening to hinder the prospects of the three-time major winner repeating a deep run in Paris where he lost to Novak Djokovic last year.

Zverev, the 16th seed, will meet Canada's world No 6 Milos Raonic after the Wimbledon finalist comfortably defeated Tomas Berdych 6-3 6-2.
