Kyle Edmund suffered a second-round defeat at the Lyon Open while Milos Raonic, Tomas Berdych and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga eased into the last eight.

The British number two completed his preparations for the French Open with a three-set defeat to fifth seed Gilles Simon but will look back on missed opportunities for a victory against the world No 32.

Edmund was impressive in taking the opening set and had his chances in the second when he saw a host of break points go begging that would have given him the chance to serve for the match.

Simon punished Edmund to seal his place in the quarter-final rallying to win 3-6 7-5 6-4 and set up a date with third seed Tomas Berdych who overcame an early scare to beat South Korea's rising star Hyeon Chung 6-3 7-5.

Elsewhere, the top seed Milos Raonic continued his return to form and fitness with a routine straight sets victory over Denis Istomin.

The world number six is playing for the fourth week in succession after a season where injuries have hampered his progress, but having reached the quarter-final in Rome last week, he reached the last eight in Lyon to remain on course for a first title since January 2016.

Raonic was too strong for Istomin, coming through 6-4 6-3 and he will next face Portugal's Gastao Elias who stunned Juan Martin del Potro in their second-round match.

Del Potro looked to be feeling the effects of his run to the quarter-final in Rome, which included a victory over Kei Nishikori, as he went down in straight sets to Elias who is enjoying his best performance of the season.

In the bottom half of the draw, second seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had to come from a set down to beat Carlos Berlocq 6-7 6-2 6-3 and next up for the Frenchman is rising Russian star Karen Khachanov who beat Jordan Thompson 7-6 6-2.

The world no 3 led 5-2 after 37 minutes when Dutra Silva suffered an ankle injury, leaving Wawrinka to advance to a meeting with America's Sam Querrey who beat Croatia's Franko Skugor 6-2 6-3.

There were defeats for two of the other top four seeds as Albert Ramos-Vinolas and John Isner crashed out at the second-round stage.

Span's third seed Ramos-Vinolas was beaten 7-5 6-1 by Russia's Andrey Kuznetsov and German qualifier Mischa Zverev accounted for fourth seed Isner with a 6-4 6-7 6-3 victory.

Kuznetsov will nest face lucky loser Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, whose good fortune has led the world no 314 to a first ATP quarter-final since 2012.

Having been handed a place in the main draw following the withdrawal of Viktor Troicki, Stebe beat Jan-Lennard Struff in the first round and on Wednesday led Janko Tipsarevic 6-4 0-1 when the Serb was forced to retire through illness.

Next up for Zverev is fifth seed Steve Johnson, who had little trouble in beating Argentina's Horacio Zeballos 6-1 6-3.
