French Open: Defending champion Garbine Muguruza beats Francesca Schiavone in first round
Tuesday 30 May 2017 14:42, UK
Garbine Muguruza began the defence of her French Open title with a straight sets win against former champion Francesca Schiavone on Monday.
Spain's Muguruza won 6-2 6-4 in the first round with an emphatic display of powerful hitting that Schiavone, the 2010 winner, had no answer for.
Muguruza shocked Serena Williams in last year's final and is the fourth seed this year - Williams is absent from this year's tournament while world No 1 Angelique Kerber has already crashed out at the opening hurdle.
"I know I played good here before, but that doesn't make me extra confident this year," Muguruza said. "I have to play well to earn that confidence again."
Caroline Wozniacki survived a scare against teenager Jaimee Fourlis, eventually prevailing in three sets.
Wildcard Fourlis, aged 17, was the lowest-ranked player in the main draw at No 337 but pushed 11th seed Wozniacki, who was forced to fight for a 6-4 3-6 6-2 win.
