Garbine Muguruza humbled world No 2 Simona Halep to win the Cincinnati Open final in less than an hour on Sunday.

The Wimbledon champion destroyed Help 6-1 6-0, denying the Romanian top ranking in the process.

Halep had reached the final without dropping a set, but a weak second serve proved easy meat for Muguruza, who won 89 per cent of points on her opponent's second delivery.

"I played so bad today and Garbine played so well," Halep said on court at the end. "I will come back next year and try to do better."

Muguruza will start among the favourites for the upcoming US Open as she chases a third Grand Slam title.

But she said: "The US Open is a very long tournament. It's completely different. I'm just trying to play well."
