Japan's Kei Nishikori somehow managed to net a straightforward smash with an open court in his eyesight and Novak Djokovic nowhere to be seen.
The Serb fought back against Nishikori to earn a 2-6 6-1 6-3 victory in the quarter-finals of the Masters 1000 tournament in the Italian capital.
"It was a fantastic match, we went toe to toe all the way to last shot. He started, he was flawless from both ends," said the four-time champion.
Djokovic beat Japan's top player for the 12th time in succession, but it could have been so different had Nishikori managed to nail a sitter of an overhead.
