Nick Kyrgios is through to the quarter-finals of the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart after seeing off Maximilian Marterer in three sets on Thursday.

Kyrgios, who missed the French Open, returned to action with his first appearance his April by seeing off the German 6-4 4-6 6-3.

Marterer is at a career-high ranking of 50th after reaching the fourth round at Roland Garros, where he lost to eventual champion Rafa Nadal in straight sets, but didn't have enough to match his opponent despite taking the second set.

Kyrgios will face Feliciano Lopez in the quarter-finals after the Spaniard beat Gilles Simon in straight sets 7-6 6-4. The first set was tight until Lopez snatched it 8-6 on the tiebreak before going on to seal the second set for victory.

Guido Pella will face Roger Federer in the quarter-finals after seeing off Prajnesh Gunneswaran 7-6 6-4. The Indian qualifier had shocked Denis Shapovalov in the first round, but could not maintain that form as he fell to a straight sets defeat to the Argentine Pella on Thursday.

Elsewhere, Thomas Berdych saw off Benoit Paire in straight sets 7-6 6-4 and Milos Raonic beat Marton Fucsovics 6-2 6-4.
