Hingis dumped by Mirza

Sania Mirza shocked Martina Hingis in LA, where Marion Bartoli made an early exit.

Five-time Grand Slam winner makes early exit

Sania Mirza was a surprise second round winner over Martina Hingis at the Los Angeles Classic, where Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli also made an early exit. Five-time Grand Slam winner Hingis was beaten 6-2 2-6 6-4 by India's Mirza, who needed four match points to clinch victory in a tense deciding set. "To beat one of the quickest players on the tour and to have to dig deep to do it, that feels great," Mirza said. "It tells me that I can do it again." Bartoli has struggled since her defeat to Venus Williams at SW19 and her 7-6 6-3 loss to Russia's made it three early exits in as many weeks. "When you win a lot of matches and you are used to playing the big points, then you are confident," Bartoli said. "When you don't play the big points, you think a little too much." Defending champion Elena Dementieva is through to the second round after a 6-3 6-1 success against fellow Russian Ekaterina Makarova. Top seed Maria Sharapova plays her first match on Wednesday against Eleni Daniilidou, who reached round two by beating Arevane Rezai 3-6 6-2 6-1. The Serbian duo of Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic, the second and third seeds respectively, will also enter the tournament.
