US Open Champion Kim Clijsters began her campaign at the WTA Championship in Doha with a 6-2 6-3 win over Jelena Jankovic.
World number one Wozniacki stunned by Stosur
Kim Clijsters beat Jelena Jankovic 6-2 6-3 at the WTA Championships in her first outing since winning the US Open at Flushing Meadows.
The Belgian got off to a successful start in the White Group, though she was not at her best in a match that failed to hit the heights in Doha.
Clijsters began well enough, breaking her opponent's serve in the very first game and then following that up with another soon after to go 5-2 ahead.
She comfortably served out for the opening set and although Jankovic did improve in the second, the out-of-sorts Serbian still slipped to a second defeat in the season-ending tournament.
Happy
"It was my first match back, and I was happy - not with everything but I'll take that," she said afterwards. "I need to be a little more consistent and deliver fewer double faults, but I will try to be better tomorrow (Thursday)."
Meanwhile in the same group, Vera Zvonareva maintained her unbeaten start with a 7-6 6-4 victory over Victoria Azarenka.
The second seed hammered Jankovic in Tuesday's opener but endured a difficult scrap with her Belarussian opponent before coming through.
Indeed, Azarenka must wonder how the match got away from her after she claimed early breaks of serve in both sets.
She held leads of 2-0 and 4-2 in the opener, before US Open runner-up Zvonareva finally levelled at 5-5 and the Russian then edged the tie-break with the help of an ace.
Azarenka, the last to qualify in the eight-player line-up, did not seem fazed by the loss of the first set as she quickly moved ahead in the next by breaking in the opening game.
She led 3-1 before Zvonareva battled back once more and with Azarenka struggling to maintain her composure in the intense heat, the world number two broke again in the ninth game before serving out the match.
Wozniacki stunned
The final match on Wednesday saw world number one Caroline Wozniacki suffer a shock loss at the hands of Australian Samantha Stosur.
The 6-4 6-3 success for Stosur, which saw her hit 26 winners, means she is now two from two having already beaten Francesca Schiavone.
The result not only means Wozniacki will have to work hard to qualify from the Maroon Group but also that she has not yet secured top spot in the rankings for the rest of the year.
The Dane will get another chance to make sure of the honour when she takes on reigning French Open champion Schiavone next time out.
