Canadian bows out of tournament with stomach illness

Last week's winners Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Milos Raonic lost their opening matches at the eight-man invitational Kooyong Classic on Wednesday. Tsonga, who won the Qatar Open, went down 6-4 6-3 to Jurgen Melzer of Austria as cold and blustery conditions in Melbourne made life difficult for the players. And Raonic, who did not drop a service game in winning the Chennai title, crashed 6-1 6-2 to American Mardy Fish before withdrawing from the rest of the tournament with an upset stomach. "It's been a long time since I've really felt 100 percent healthy, which I do now," said Fish, who finished in the top 10 for the first time last season. "And now I just need the matches and I need to get going again." Australian teenager Bernard Tomic beat world number seven Tomas Berdych 4-6 6-3 6-4 while Gael Monfils finished off the day with a 7-6 7-6 win over American veteran Andy Roddick. Monfils hit a between-the-legs winner to seal the first tie-break and Roddick saved the first of four match points in the next before the Frenchman put away a volley to seal victory.
