Serena Williams booked her spot in the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open with a 6-2 6-3 victory over Peng Shuai.

Top seed Williams, who has won the event in each of the last two years, lost just one point on serve as she eased through the opening set.

China’s Peng showed a little more resistance in the second but missed a crucial chance when she failed to convert two break points on the American’s serve.

And when Williams fashioned a break-point opportunity she needed just one chance to seal what proved to be the only break of the set.

Williams will face 14th seed Carla Suarez Navarro next after the Spaniard, who won the Portugal Open last week, defeated Alison Riske 6-2 6-4.

Elsewhere, No 4 seed Simona Halep also progressed to the last 16 in straight sets as she clinched a 6-4 6-4 victory over Lara Arruabarrena.

"This tournament means a lot for me, because the last year it was a real turning point for me. I'm really happy that I could win today in two sets to be in third round here," Halep said.

But former world No 1 Caroline Wozniacki failed to reached the last 16 after she was defeated 6-3 6-3 by Italian veteran Roberta Vinci.
