Fifth-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut reached the second round of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow after beating local hope Andrei Kuznetsov 6-3 6-4.
The Spaniard came through in 77 minutes to set up a meeting with either big-serving Australian Sam Groth or Russian wild card Andrei Rublev, who play on Tuesday.
The world No 16 won the last three games of the first set, then had two match points saved while leading 5-2 in the second, but wrapped up victory soon after.
"It felt good. I think I played a solid match," Bautista Agut said. "I feel a lot of confidence."
Also, eighth-seeded Andreas Seppi advanced after a 7-5 6-4 win against Serbia's Dusan Lajovic.
Seppi, the 2012 Kremlin Cup champion and a semi-finalist last year, faces either Croatia's Ivan Dodig or Spain's Pere Riba in the second round.
"(Lajovic) is a very tough player. He did pretty well, so it's a good first-round win," Italy's Seppi said. "I've played some very nice matches here, so coming back is pretty special for me."
Meanwhile, Daniel Gimeno came through against Czech youngster Jiri Vesely 7-5 6-3 while Filip Krajinovic dispatched Tunisia's Malek Jaziri 6-4 6-2.
Kuznetsova through
In the women's draw, fifth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova advanced to the second round when her Czech opponent Klara Koukalova retired with a viral illness after losing the first set 6-1.
The 29-year-old Russian, currently 26th in the world, looked in complete command from the start and broke twice to take the opening set in 30 minutes.
After that the Czech veteran Koukalova, 32, retired blaming a viral illness for her withdrawal.
"It wasn't bad at all to play a short match today," Kuznetsova said.
"I always prefer to start the tournament from the very beginning as when you have an opening round bye it's sometimes hard to play against an opponent who has already adjusted to the surface and the arena."
Either Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus or Ukrainian qualifier Kateryna Kozlova awaits Kuznetsova in the second round.
Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova also progressed, beating Danka Kovinic of Montenegro 6-2 6-2.
