Kremlin Cup: Marin Cilic moves into the last eight in Moscow

Second seed Marin Cilic reached the Bank of Moscow Kremlin Cup quarter-finals with a three-set victory over Russian wild card Evgeny Donskoy.

The Croatian favourite dropped the second set and the players traded breaks in the third but Cilic finally pulled through 6-3 3-6 6-3.

Fifth seed Roberto Bautista Agut is also through to the last eight after a hard-fought 7-6 (7/5) 7-6 (7/4) win over Sam Groth and is joined by Andreas Seppi, who beat Ivan Dodig 7-5 7-6 (7/3).

In the remaining first-round matches, Tommy Robredo beat Pedja Krstin 7-6 (8/6) 6-4 and Mikhail Youzhny overcame Victor Baluda 6-3 6-4.

Women's shocks

There were shocks in the women's event as second and third seeds Ekaterina Makarova and Flavia Pennetta crashed out to Irina-Camelia Begu and Camila Giorgi respectively.

Romanian Begu is ranked 49 places lower than Makarova, who was handed a first-round bye, but the gap did not show as she claimed a 6-4 6-4 victory to disappoint the home crowd.

And Giorgi also triumphed in straight sets in her all-Italian clash with Pennetta.

Giorgi took the first set on a tie-break and led 3-2 with a break in the second but, after saving Pennetta's first two break points of the match, finally gave the break back.

She broke back once more though, and held her nerve from there to win 7-6 (7/4) 6-4.

Also through the to the quarter-finals are Lucie Safarova, who beat Ajla Tomljanovic 7-6 (7/4) 6-2, and Svetlana Kuznetsova - a 3-6 6-3 6-3 winner over Kateryna Kozlova.

In the two remaining first-round matches, Kristina Mladenovic beat Karolina Pliskova 6-3 7-5 while Alison Riske was a convincing 6-1 6-2 winner over Darya Kasatkina.
