Roger Federer was pushed to three sets before finally beating Jeremy Chardy 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 to reach the third round of the Paris Masters.
The in-form Swiss - fresh off a tournament victory on home soil in Basel on Sunday - overcame a sluggish start in the French capital to extend his impressive winning run to 13 matches.
However the 17-time Grand Slam champion had to battle hard to beat Chardy; the Frenchman was the more dominant of the two on court in the opening set, only to eventually see it slip from his grasp in the tie-break.
Federer failed to take two match-point opportunities when 5-4 up in a second set he would go on to lose, but an early break of serve at the start of the decider proved enough. He comfortably served out for the win, finally ending an entertaining contest after two hours and 31 minutes on court.
"I thought I really struggled in the first set to get the rhythm going," he told Sky Sports. "I thought he played very well. He was not missing much, serving well and hitting his forehand extremely well."
Wawrinka through
Federer's compatriot Stan Wawrinka managed to progress in two sets, though he too did not have it all his own way in recording a 6-4 7-6 (8-6) victory over Austrian youngster Dominic Thiem.
The 29-year-old - who had suffered early losses in the last three tournaments on his schedule - came through a tight match to book a meeting with big-serving South African Kevin Anderson.
Canada's Milos Raonic kept alive his chances of reaching the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals with a tough three-set win over American qualifier Jack Sock.
The No 7 seed needs to win the tournament in Paris to guarantee his place in the elite eight-man field in London, which begins on November 9.
He scraped through against world No 44 Sock, 6-3 5-7 7-6 (7-4) in just over two hours of action and will next meet Roberto Bautista Agut, the Spaniard having knocked out Frenchman Richard Gasquet.
There was better news for two other players appearing on home turf - Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the 10th seed, saw off Jurgen Melzer of Austria 6-2 4-6 6-2, while qualifier Lucas Pouille upset the 16th-seeded Fabio Fognini 7-6 (7/5) 7-6 (9/7) in a rather bad-tempered affair that ended with the Italian exchanging views with umpire Carlos Bernardes.
Meanwhile, 2013 finalist David Ferrer came through in three sets against Belgian hotshot David Goffin, 6-3 2-6 6-3.
