Lucie Safarova has withdrawn from next week’s AEGON Classic which starts in Birmingham on Monday.
The 28-year-old from the Czech Republic has not fully recovered from her exertions at the recent French Open where she reached her first grand slam final, only to lose to Serena Williams in three sets.
The run to the final, that included a victory over defending champion Maria Sharapova, moved Safarova into the top 10 of the WTA world ranking for the first time in her career.
However, the world No 7 – who would have been seeded three at the Priory Club in Edgbaston – has decided to take an extra week’s rest before commencing her grass-court practice ahead of Wimbledon.
Britain’s Heather Watson is in the field for Birmingham where world No 3 Simona Halep of Romania is the top seed.
The No 2 seed is Serb Ana Ivanovic, the world No 6, who is the defending champion.
