Margarita Gasparyan beats Patricia Maria Tig in Baku Cup final

Margarita Gasparyan claimed the first WTA Tour title of her career as she won the battle of the two surprise finalists to beat Patricia Maria Tig at the Baku Cup.
The unseeded Russian had not won a match at WTA main draw level in her career before enjoying a strong showing in Azerbaijan - and she maintained her form to beat qualifier Tig on Sunday.
Tig's appearance was even more of a surprise as the qualifier saw off top seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the semi-finals before succumbing to a 6-3 5-7 6-0 loss to Gasparyan, who herself had beaten No 2 seed Karin Knapp to reach the final.
Gasparyan settled the quicker of the two and took the first set with relative ease before serving for the match in the second.
But Tig finally turned up and the world No 154 battled back to break to love and level proceedings.
The 24-year-old Romanian did not have an answer to Gasparyan when she turned up the heat in the decider and the world No 112 won comfortably to take her maiden crown in just under two and a half hours.
