French ace suffers hamstring strain

Eleventh seed Tatiana Golovin crashed out of the East West Bank Classic in California on Monday as her injury woes continued. The French teenager, who missed two months of the season with an ankle injury, was forced to retire with a hamstring problem after losing the first set 7-5 against Tamarine Tanasugarn. Golovin, 19, has had a difficult time of it since returning to action, losing in the second round at Wimbledon before early exits at Stanford and the Acura Classic. "It started bothering me a few days ago - I probably shouldn't even have gone on court," admitted Golovin.

Really painful

"I'm still coming back from injury and I think I might have overplayed a little, with doubles. I played six matches in three days. "I shouldn't even have started. From the beginning it was really painful for me to play. I wanted to give it a shot because you never know, sometimes it will go away. "I hope this is something totally different and nothing to do with the ankle." Alona Bondarenko was another seed to subside in California as the 14th-ranked Ukrainian lost 1-6 6-2 6-3 to her compatriot - a qualifier - Yuliana Fedak. Maria Sharapova, fresh from victory in the Acura Classic, heads a list of eight seeds who received byes into the second round.
