Russian secures safe passage into third round

Third seed Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Italy's Roberta Vinci 6-2 7-6 (9-7) to book her place in the third round of Toronto's Rogers Cup. The 2004 US Open champion was broken at 5-5 in the second set, but rallied to break back and force a tiebreaker. It was the Russian's first action since going out of the Wimbledon quarter-finals to eventual winner Venus Williams in July. Israel's Shahar Peer made lighter work of her second round opponent and doubles partner Tathiana Garbin. The 11th seed won 6-3 6-2 to secure her first consecutive wins on the tour since Wimbledon. In the day's final third round match-up, Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik was trailing 6-1 4-2 in her match against China's Peng Shuai, before illness forced the 14th seed to retire.
