Russian still suffering from viral illness

Former US Open finalist Vera Zvonareva has withdrawn from next week's tournament because of a virus. The Russian is down to 16th in the world rankings after a frustrating year that is going from bad to worse. Zvonareva, who lost to Kim Clijsters in the 2010 final at Flushing Meadows, missed the French Open with a shoulder injury. She then retired midway through her third-round match with Clijsters at Wimbledon because of the virus, before losing 6-0 6-1 to Serena Williams at the Olympics. Ranked as high as number two at the end of a stellar 2010, Zvonareva had skipped recent events in Montreal and Cincinnati in a bid to be fit for the final Grand Slam of the season.
