Wrist injury puts paid to Czech's challenge

Top seed Nicole Vaidisova fell at the first hurdle in the Bell Challenge in Canada when she was forced to retire with a wrist injury. The Czech world number 12 cruised through the first set against compatriot Renata Voracova, but had just lost the second 6-3 when she decided to call it quits. American fourth seed Meilen Tu was also eliminated on Wednesday when she lost 6-2 6-2 to Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson. The Swede could face rejuvenated American Lindsay Davenport in the quarter-finals, if the former world number one gets past Aleksandra Wozniak. Second-seeded Vera Zvonareva, of Russia, was also pushed by France's Severine Bremond in another first round match. The 23-year-old Zvonareva eventually defeated Bremond 6-3 7-6 win over to advance to a meeting with either Olga Poutchkova of Russia or Jill Craybus of the United States.
