Andy Murray, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are all in Cincinnati action
Saturday 29 August 2015 13:16, UK
Andy Murray will meet Richard Gasquet for a place in the semi-finals and a potential clash against Roger Federer at the Cincinnati Masters, live on Sky Sports.
The newly-promoted world No 2 reached the last eight after defying the odds to remove Grigor Dimitrov in a mesmerising encounter on Thursday evening.
Murray was almost beaten inside two sets but steeled himself to force a decider and ultimately a gripping 4-6 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 triumph.
He will have little time to recover for his match against 12th seed Gasquet as it is scheduled to commence at around 7.30pm (BST) and you can watch the action live on Sky Sports 3.
The Scot, who will tackle either Federer or Spain's Feliciano Lopez if he reaches the final four, insists he feels ready to challenge all comers.
"If you want to win the big competitions, you'll have to come through difficult situations," Murray told the official ATP Tour website. "Last year, I didn't come through enough of them.
"I lost a lot of matches from winning positions, and this year I managed to turn that around, which was very positive."
Murray leads fellow Wimbledon semi-finalist Gasquet 5-3 in head-to-head meetings with the French No 2's last victory over the Brit coming three years ago in Rome.
Federer faced fewer obstacles on his way to beating Kevin Anderson 6-1 6-1 and the 17-time major winner is now tasked with eliminating Feliciano Lopez, a surprise 5-7 6-4 7-6 (7-3) vanquisher of another Spaniard, 2013 Cincinnati champion Rafael Nadal.
The Swiss No 1 will be hot favourite to set up a mouth-watering meeting with Murray as the 34-year-old is unbeaten in his last 11 matches against Lopez.
World No 1 Novak Djokovic will challenge Stan Wawrinka in a rematch of the French Open final after the Serb overcame a real test against David Goffin to progress.
The Serbian, who is aiming to become the first player to win all nine different ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles, came through 6-4 2-6 6-3 against the Belgian to book a quarter-final berth.
Fifth seed Wawrinka progressed by resisting the huge serve of Ivo Karlovic, who fired down 35 aces, to grind out a 6-7 (2-7) 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-5) win.
Djokovic holds a 17-4 lead, but when it comes to the big occasions, Wawrinka has beaten the nine-time Grand Slam champion twice, in the final of the Australian Open in 2014 and Roland Garros this summer.
Elsewhere, Tomas Berdych thrashed Tommy Robredo 6-0 6-1 and will encounter qualifier Alexandr Dolgopolov, who conquered Jerzy Janowicz 6-3 3-6 6-4 in the night match. The Czech sixth seed has not lost in any of their four previous meetings.
