Wimbledon 2014: Sabine Lisicki and Agnieszka Radwanska move into second round

Sabine Lisicki opened her Wimbledon campaign with a 6-2 6-1 victory over Julia Glushko on Centre Court on Tuesday.

The 19th seed, who was beaten in the final last year, overcame some early jitters to overwhelm her Israeli opponent.

A flurry of unforced errors meant it was not the most polished performance but the big-hitting German looked comfortable enough during the straightforward win.

Lisicki is looking to buck the trend of an arduous season in which she has yet to string together three straight victories and has been hampered by a shoulder problem.

"I love that court so much. It definitely helped me. The crowd, as well, helped me to settle very quickly," Lisicki said.

"My last few months haven't been good. With my shoulder injury, I was struggling. I probably shouldn't have played, and I played.

Rhythm

"But it's about now. I'm getting my rhythm back and playing the way I can play and getting the confidence again."

Lisicki opened the day two action on Wimbledon’s main court in the absence of Marion Bartoli, the Frenchwoman who defeated her in last year’s final before retiring from the sport.

Bartoli appeared on court before Lisicki and Glushko began their match, receiving a rapturous welcome back. She watched the contest from the Royal Box.

Elsewhere in the women’s draw, 2012 runner-up Agnieszka Radwanska completed a 6-2 6-1 in her opening match against Andreea Mitu, which began on Monday but was carried over following late-evening rain.

French Open finalist Simon Halep eased past Teliana Pereira 6-2 6-2, while former world No 1 Ana Ivanovic defeated Francesca Schiavone 7-6 (8-6) 6-4.

Former world No 1 Caroline Wozniacki was another who had to come back on Tuesday to complete an opening match, the 16th-seeded Dane converting a set and 2-0 lead over Israel's Shahar Peer into a 6-3 6-0 victory.

Caroline Garcia knocked out 14th seed Sara Errani 2-6 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 win, while Eugenie Bouchard, Alize Cornet and Andrea Petkovic also made it through.
