Johanna Konta was unable to hold off a strong challenge from Eugenie Bouchard as the Canadian won their second-round Wimbledon match 6-3 1-6 6-1 on Thursday.

Bouchard, the 2014 runner-up, powered through the final set in impressive style to reach the third round of a major for the first time this year.

She will next face 19th seed Dominika Cibulkova after she beat Daria Gavrilova 6-3 6-2.

The Canadian has struggled for consistency since reaching the final at the All England Club two years ago, but she showed signs that she could be returning to form in an absorbing Centre Court contest.

It was 16th seed Konta who got the early break to lead 2-1, only for Bouchard to fight back and take the opening set with just one unforced error to her name.

However, fortunes were reversed in the second as Konta took control, saving all eight break points she faced to level the match.

The momentum appeared to be with the British No 1 heading into the decider, but it was Bouchard who surged to victory.
