Liam Broady was unable to repeat his Wimbledon heroics as he suffered a straight sets defeat to David Goffin in the second round.

The British No 6 had built up his reputation with an opening day win over Marinko Matosevic, but was overpowered by 16th seed Goffin in a 7-6 (7-3) 6-1 6-1 defeat.

There was little to separate the two players in the first set, despite Goffin's greater experience and ranking, until the Belgian edged the tie-break.

Broady had battled back from two sets down to defeat Matosevic on Monday, but could not compete with Goffin's precise ground strokes from the baseline.

Facing a match point at 5-0 down in the third set, Broady stubbornly hauled back a game, and this proved a final act of resistance as Goffin sealed victory a few minutes later.
