Top-seeded world No 1 Novak Djokovic raced into the second round of the US Open with a 6-1 6-1 6-1 demolition of Joao Souza of Brazil.

Djokovic had to wait in the wings for Venus Williams to complete her match, but once the Serb hit the court he played as if he had a taxi meter running outside Arthur Ashe Stadium.

He dropped only three games in beating 91st-ranked Souza and did not face a single break point.

The reigning Australian and Wimbledon champion won each set 6-1 in a 71 minute romp.

"There's something I love about number one, for sure," Djokovic told the crowd in an on-court interview.

Djokovic arrived in Flushing Meadows with some question marks hanging over his form following defeats in consecutive weeks to Andy Murray in Montreal and Roger Federer in Cincinnati.

The Serb, however, often saves his best for the heat of a Grand Slam and he never had to leave first gear against Souza who looked out of his depth from the start.

Seven breaks of serve, including two in the final set, and 24 winners ensured Djokovic moved safely into the second round on a day which also saw his 2014 conqueror Kei Nishikori crash out.

Nishikori beat Djokovic in the semi-finals 12 months ago and the pair had been due to meet again in the last four, but the Japanese fell at the first hurdle in a five-set defeat to France's Benoit Paire.

Djokovic will next meet either Canadian Vasek Pospisil or Andreas Haider-Maurer of Austria next.
