Roger Federer beat Philipp Kohlschreiber in three sets to set up a clash against John Isner

Roger Federer took another straight-sets step forward at the US Open with a 6-3 6-4 6-4 third-round victory over Philipp Kohlschreiber on Saturday.

Federer, who won at Flushing Meadows five times in a row from 2004-08, entered the match against Kohlschreiber having won 72 straight service games, including all 23 in New York.

Federer lost his serve for the first time in the tournament as Kohlschreiber broke him twice in the match, but the 34-year-old Swiss player broke right back each time and stayed in command with five service breaks of his own to improve his career record to 10-0 against the German.

"I think I won the big points today," said 17-time Grand Slam singles winner Federer. "I served well when I had to at the end."

Federer, who had sprinted through his first two matches with the loss of only nine games, next meets big-serving American John Isner.

The 13th-seeded American advanced when Czech Jiri Vesely retired when trailing 6-3 6-4.

Richard Gasquet also wasted little time in the sun, the 12th seeded Frenchman romping into the fourth round with a 6-4 6-3 6-1 win over a drained Australian Bernard Tomic, who was coming off a gruelling five set battle with countryman Lleyton Hewitt.

Donald Young, another US player, delighted the local fans as he fought back from two sets down to claim a 4-6 0-6 7-6 6-2 6-4 win over 22nd seed Viktor Troicki.
