Day one commentary
Tuesday 24 June 2008 11:54, UK
A detailed look back at the first day of this year's Wimbledon.
2127 A fine end to the day for the host nation. The final match going on ends with Ross Hutchins and Australian partner Stephen Huss securing a four-set victory. Join us again tomorrow for more live updates.
2120 The match involving 20th seed Francesca Schiavone has now been suspended. She will now have to return tomorrow afternoon but she will do so against Tamira Paszek a set to the good. It's 4-4 in the second.
2108 Two of French tennis' big guns, Amelie Mauresmo and Marion Bartoli, will both be in the women's second round draw after they recorded routine victories in straight sets tonight. France need some good news after their abysmal performance at euro 2008.
2102 Frank Dancevic is understandably delighted after he beat David Nalbandian 6-4 6-2 6-4 to move into the second round. "This is one of the best victories of my career. With my wrist (an injury he suffered at Queen's last week), I was just happy to play here. Today's a really big win for me, I'm really excited. I really was not expecting to win in straight sets. I had to take my chances and I got a break up early in each set and he looked a little shaky from the beginning." The world number 95 was very good tonight, however Nalbandian was poor throughout.
2050 Novak Djokovic has admitted he lost focus during his first round victory over Michael Berrer. "It's not easy playing on the Centre Court, almost full stadium, a lot of expectations. I lost concentration in the second set. I was trying to get used to the conditions. It's quite different if you are one of the first players to get on the Centre Court and feel the grass. It feels really great. I'm really privileged to just be a part of this tournament, which is really nice. The grass is pretty slow. I was trying to get used to the returns, I was trying to be aggressive at the same time. But he was serving pretty good in the first two sets. Maybe I lost the focus towards the end of the second set, but I managed to come back.''
2040 Tomorrow's order of play is now available in its entirety for you to have a look at on our special microsite. Andy Murray will take centre stage for British fans, but there is plenty of other stuff happening that is worth keeping an eye on.
2035 Melanie South, depsite a gutsy display, has been sent out of this year's tournament by Alona Bondarenko. The 28th seed won 6-3 6-7 (1/7) 6-4 to make her way into the second round. The future could be bright for South if she is able to build on this performance.
2030 Marion Bartoli, who was the losing finalist in last year's women's final, is rounding off the day's proceeding on Centre Court. The 11th seed has won the first set 6-2 against Germany's Sabine Katharin Lisicki and is in control of the second. It looks like she is set for a routine night's work.
2026 Nalbandian has, as expected, been sent crashing out of SW19 by Dancevic. The Canadian has beaten the seventh seed 6-4 6-2 6-4 and will now face Bobby Reynolds in the second round.
2014 Alex Bogdanovic is surprisingly perky after he was knocked our of the Championships by Italian Simone Bolelli. The British number two, who once again received a wildcard for this year's event, lost 6-7 (4/7) 6-4 3-6 6-7 (4/7). Despite this, the 24-year-old has targeted a spot in the world's top 100. "For me, it's about breaking the top 100. I believe that if I'm a top hundred player, I'll be playing bigger tournaments week in, week out and playing the top guys week in, week out, so that will help me.'' It is a good aim to have, but lets be realistic for a moment. Bogdanovic is currently ranked 271 in the world and questions about his temperament have been raised throughout his career. Sadly, despite his claims today, I think the Brit will find it very hard to prove his undoubted potential. Hopefully he will prove me wrong. Let me know your views on Bogdanovic's future by sending an e-mail to nick.hext@bskyb.com. The best could be printed.
2005 There is still plenty going on at Wimbledon at the moment, however I will now switch my focus to tomorrow's action. It promises to be a great day for those of you who have been lucky enough to get tickets for Centre Court with two of Britain's finest in action. First up, defending women's champion Venus Williams takes on Brit Naomi Cavaday and, to round off the day's action, Andy Murray will get his campaign started against Fabrice Santoro. The filling in the British sandwich is Rafael Nadal, who is to face Andreas Beck of Germany. Maria Sharapova and Andy Roddick are the star attractions on No. 1 Court.
2004 However it is not good news for the seventh seed in the men's draw. Nalbandian is struggling badly on No.1 Court and he is currently 6-4 6-2 3-1 down to Dancevic. The Argentinian is certainly not showing the form that got him to the final at SW19 in 2002.
2000 Both the men's and women's second round draws can now welcome yet another seed. In the men's, Stanislas Wawrinka (13) has beaten Marcos Daniel in straight sets and, in the women's, Agnes Szavay (15) has claimed a routine victory over Tathiana Garbin.
1954 I have good news for those of you who are desperate for some British success at this year's Championships. Melanie South is now level at one set apiece with Alona Bondarenko after winning a second set tie-break 7-1. The girl from Surrey could cause quite a shock tonight.
1950 Two familiar names have reached the second round in the men's draw. Mario Ancic has beaten Michael Llodra after the 32nd seed retired through injury, while former US Open champion Marat Safin defeated Fabio Fognini in straight sets.
1944 Elena Baltacha has spoken about the new fitness regime which has helped her reach the second round of this year's Wimbledon. The British number four beat German Angelique Kerber 6-3 2-6 7-5 earlier today. "Since I've been going to the NTC (National Tennis Centre), I've been looking at other areas off court like nutrition. I put on quite a bit of weight end of last year because of my back problem. At one event in Doha before I joined the NTC, my whole body just shut off. I knew I was unfit and I needed to do something about it. I've trimmed down a lot and now I feel really fit. I've lost a lot of weight and I'm chuffed about that. Physically, I'm at my peak. But I'm really gutted because it means I've had to cut out pizza - pepperoni was my favourite. I'll have to ask my coach if I can have a slice tonight to celebrate.'' I think Elena should lay off the pizza until the end of this year's Championship, however if I was in her shoes I would probably have a slice. Its a tough decision.
1937 Ferrer has inked his name in the second round draw after his opponent was forced to withdraw from their match with injury. Stakhovsky was two sets to love down, however he was leading the third 3-1 prior to his withdrawal.
1933 Ana Ivanovic says she is enjoying being the new world number one and Wimbledon title favourite after her convincing victory in the first round today against Rossana de los Ros. "I think I played quite well today considering it's my first match on grass. It was great to be back on grass. It (the expectation) is very challenging for me. It's something new and exciting. Coming in as the top seed means lots of people expect you to win. Becoming number one takes more pressure. But I see it as a positive thing. If you put yourself in a position to do something memorable then you feel pressure."
1928 Agnieszka is through. My favourite Radwanska sister has claimed the second set of her match with Benesova 6-0 and will now look ahead to the next round. The Pole is a former junior champion at SW19 and could make an impact in the seniors this year.
1922 A shock could be on the cards on No.1 Court where Dancevic has claimed the first set 6-4 against seventh seed Nalbandian. Could the Canadian be an outside bet for this year's tournament? Probably not, but if you think one of the less heralded names in either draw can cause a surprise you can let me know by sending an e-mail to nick.hext@bskyb.com.
1918 Another of the plucky band of British players is currently out on court with Melanie South taking on 18th seed Alona Bondarenko. However, I can only bring South fans bad news as she has lost the first set 6-3.
1914 Ferrer is now two sets up against Stakhovsky on Court Two. The Spaniard won his first grass court title in Hertogenbosch on Saturday and could make an impact during the next two weeks.
1908 Agnieszka Radwanska has won the first set 6-3 in her match with Benesova. The Pole's sister Urszula made her way into the second round earlier today. It will be interesting to see which sister goes the furthest at SW19 this year, I'm going for Agrieszka.
1904 Marcos Baghdatis was delighted to return to Wimbledon after his victory over Steve Darcis. "I'm pretty happy with the way I was playing on the baseline and returning, but not so happy with the way I served. But I'm pretty happy to win and be in the second round, that's for sure. It feels good to be playing back here. To be playing on grass it feels very good, for sure. It's one of my favourite surfaces, if not my favourite one." It looks like the Cypriot is going to enjoy his time in south-west London this year.
1857 David Nalbandian has become the next player to take centre stage on No.1 Court. The 2002 finalist here at SW19 is now in action against Frank Dancevic.
1853 Lleyton Hewitt has admitted after his victory over Robin Haase that he is suffering with a sore hip. "It's a little bit sore but I just have to put up with it. This is Wimbledon, one of my favourite tournaments, otherwise I probably wouldn't be playing. I will just keep trying and hopefully it will hold up."
1847 Another seed has made his way through in the men's draw. Fernando Verdasco, the 22nd seed, has beaten Germany's Phillip Kohlschreiber 6-4 6-3 6-2.
1840 Roger Federer admits he felt a bit of pressure before he reached the second round with a 6-3 6-2 6-2 victory over Dominik Hrbaty. "It's great because I did feel all of a sudden like a little bit of pressure about two minutes before I went on court. I felt like, 'Wow, okay, here we go. Let's get off to a good start'. I did. I don't think I dropped a point in the first few games. That right away put away the pressure and I could just concentrate on trying to play well.''
1833 David Ferrer, the fifth seed in the men's draw, is in action on Court Two at the moment. The Spaniard is one set up after winning a first set tie-break against Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky 8-6.
1827 The match of the day has come to an end on No.1 Court. Hewitt has prevailed in a five set thriller with Haase by winning the fifth 6-2. Fair play to the Australian, but is is Haase who deserves a lot of the credit from this match after battling back with an injury, which he appeared to pick up in the third set.
1824 Agnieszka Radwanska is now out on Centre Court. The Pole, who won in Eastbourne last week, is taking on Iveta Benesova for a place in the second round.
1817 The day's second completed fifth-setter has come to an end. Tomas Berdych has beaten Evgeny Korolev 4-6 6-1 6-4 3-6 7-5. The 11th seed lost in the quarter-finals to Nadal at SW19 last year.
1810 Djokovic has found his best form when it really matters today. The third seed has thrashed Berrer 6-0 in the final set of their clash to seal a 7-5 2-6 6-3 6-0 victory. He will have to improve to get past Nadal and Federer, but he has proved in the past he is capable of doing just that.
1806 Anna Chakvetadze has produced a Take That-esque comeback to reach the second round. The eighth seed was struggling massively in the final set of her clash with Stephanie Dubois, but she eventually recovered to claim a 2-6 6-1 8-6 win.
1800 Bogdanovic's dreams of glory are sadly over for another year after he lost his fourth set tie-break to Bolelli 7-4. The Italian has put his name in the second round draw with a 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 6-3 7-6 (7-4) victory. At last we can safely assumed Bogdanovic will be given his eighth consecutive Wimbledon wild card next year.
1756 Stadler has produced a big shock in the men's draw by sending Karlovic packing. The German has claimed a 4-6 7-6 6-3 7-5 victory to end the dreams of the big Croat for another year.
1753 Hewitt v Haase has gone to a final set decider. The Dutchman has levelled things up with a 7-1 victory in the fourth set tie-break. His feet seem to be better and I'm firmly sticking with my earlier prediction that he will prevail.
1749 Djokovic is now two sets to one up against Berrer after claiming the third 6-3. Has the Serb cracked his opponent? I think so, but Berrer will continue to fight.
1744 Gonzalez, the 15th seed in the men's draw, has wrapped up a 7-6 7-5 7-5 victory over Ginepri. The Chilean also beat his American opponent at SW19 last year. I think I can make a decent guess at who Ginepri will want to avoid in next year's draw.
1737 The fourth set of Bogdanovic v Bolelli has gone to a tie-break. The Brit is currently two sets to one down to his Italian opponent.
1732 Serena Williams says she will be around for "decades" to come after she beat Kaia Kanepi in two sets this afternoon. I do everything Venus does. I've tried to grow out of that, but I still kind of do everything that she does," Williams said. "But she's playing for at least a long, long, long time. So we'll both be out here for a long time. We have decades left at Wimbledon. We definitely plan on capitalising. I think from these quotes we can safely assume Serena wants to be about for a long, long, long time, if not longer.
1727 Kuznetsova is through. The fourth seed has beaten Johansson 6-7 7-5 6-4, however she was far from convincing and it would be a brave person who tips her for glory in London this year.
1721 Djokovic has lost the second set in his first round clash 6-2. The third seed is struggling to find his rhythm so far and I think this year's tournament may have come a bit too soon for him. Let me know your views on how the Serb will fare at SW19 by sending an e-mail to nick.hext@bskyb.com.
1716 Another seed has been extinquished from the women's draw. 12th seed Patty Schnyder has tumbled out after losing 6-4 3-6 6-1 to Casey Dellacqua. Schnyder has never made an impact at Wimbledon and I think time is running out for her to do so in the future.
1714 Karlovic is two sets to one down against Stadler on Court 19. The giant Croat was tipped to do well at SW19 this year after winning the Slazenger Open in Nottingham last week.
1711 Haase is going to try and continue in this match. Hopefully whatever the trainer has done to his feet will help him recover and he will be able to provide Hewitt with a tough test.
1706 The Hewitt v Haase match has now been halted as the Dutchman receives some treatment. The trainer has come out onto court and is dabbing Haase's foot with some kind of medical liquid, you can tell from that last remark I am not a chiropodist, and It looks like this could be a lengthy hold-up.
1704 Hewitt hasn't lost any of the fire that made him Wimbledon champion in 2002. The Australian is using his customary shouts of "come on" at every opportunity, however he will need more than that to claim glory at SW19 this year.
1700 It looks like I may have put a curse on Haase. The Dutch youngster is now trailing Hewitt by two sets to one and he is starting to look second best to the former Wimbledon champion.
1656 Bogdanovic is back up against it as his see-saw battle with Bolelli continues. The Italian claimed the third set 6-3 and now leads by two sets to one. Can the Brit bounce back or will he once again disappoint? My proverbial money is on the latter.
1652 Berrer has made Djokovic battle for the first set in their first round clash on Centre Court. The third seed has taken the set 7-5.
1647 Kuznetsova is playing on Court 2. This is the court's final year as it will be replaced in 2009 by an amphitheatre style arena. However, I don't think it is time to hang up its tag of 'graveyard of champions' just yet.
1644 Kuznetsova has claimed the second set in her match against Johansson 7-5. That clash is now level at one set apiece as it moves towards its conclusion.
1635 The umpire in the Hewitt v Haase match is wearing a bizarre style of beret. Hewitt shouted at him in the second set, presumably because of the poor quality of his headwear. He would be much better in a baseball cap, it is far too hot for a beret today.
1630 Hewitt has hit back to level his match with Haase at one set apiece. I'm going to stick to my guns and predict a win for the Dutchman. Holland could certainly do with some sporting joy after their defeat in the Euro 2008 quarter-finals to Russia on Saturday.
1625 Bogdanovic appears to be following the lead of his fellow Brit Baltacha by showing great spirit to claim the second set of his first round match 6-4. Will this be a vintage day for British tennis?
1621 Two more seeds have fallen in the women's draw. Maria Kirilenko (19) and Alize Cornet (17) have both lost in straight sets and will now have to wait another year before trying to make an impact in south-west London.
1615 Jason O'Connor has got in touch to see he is tipping Rafael Nadal and Ana Ivanovic for glory at SW19 this year. I'm going to disagree with you Jason and plump for Roger Federer and a slight outsider in Elena Dementieva. Do you agree with Jason or me, or do you have a couple of fresh names to give us? Let me know your views by sending an e-mail to nick.hext@bskyb.com. I will print the best.
1610 There could be a major shock happening on Court 2. Kuznetsova has lost the first set of her first round match to Johansson 7-6. The 4th seed will have to improve to avoid becoming another casualty at the 'graveyard of champions'.
1604 Andy Murray isn't in action until tomorrow, however the British number one has been at SW19 today. The Scotsman, who takes on Fabrice Santoro in the first round, has spent an hour on the practice courts, with fellow Brit Jamie Baker. He said "It has been good. I have practised here for six days now and got used to the courts. "I have had a few practice sets on the match courts, and they have been a little bit quicker than previous years, so it all feels pretty good.'' Do you think Murray stands a chance this year? Let me know by sending an e-mail to nick.hext@bskyb.com.
1600 The third member of the trio of likely winners in the men's draw is now in action on Centre Court. Novak Djokovic is facing Germany's Michael Berrer and is a hot favourite to move into the second round.
1548 Haase is showing exactly why I have tipped him to cause a shock. The Dutchman has won the first set of his match against former SW19 champion Hewitt 7-6.
1546 The first five-setter of the tournament has ended. Swedish veteran Thomas Johansson has beaten Vincent Spadea 6-7 (8-10) 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 6-4 6-3. I think Thomas will need a decent rest before his second round match.
1541 Ivanovic has netted a quickfire 6-2 6-3 victory. De los Rios never stood a chance as the world number one was able to impose herself on this match right from the start. It looks like she could enjoy a successful two weeks in London. Give me your throughts by sending an e-mail to nick.hext@bskyb.com. I will print the best.
1536 Bogdanovic has lost the first set of his match with Bolelli 7-6. The Brit will hopefully take inspiration from Baltacha, who, on the same court earlier today, made her way into the second round with a battling display.
1529 Haase has impressed so far against Hewitt. The Dutchman is looking like he might be able to spring the first surprise of the tournament.
1527 It is beautiful weather in London today. There are a few clouds about, but nothing that should cause anyone any concerns at all. Hopefully it will stay like this for the next two weeks.
1522 And Hewitt is currently facing Haase on No.1 Court. The Australian is leading the first set 4-3.
1519 Ivo Karlovic, who won the Slazenger Open in Nottingham last week, is in action against Simon Stadler of Germany on Court 19. The 18th seed is best remembered at Wimbledon for knocking out defending champion Hewitt in 2003.
1515 Svetlana Kuznetsova has made her way onto Court 2 to take on Mathilde Johansson, who is making her debut in the women's singles at SW19. The fourth seed should be one of the key contenders to claim glory in two weeks time.
1511 Ivanovic has quickly won the first set against de los Rios 6-1. I would be amazed if the second set doesn't follow a similar path.
1509 Ginepri and Gonzalez are level at one set apiece in their first round clash. Gonzalez was a quarter-finalist here in 2005, although his American opponent has a style well suited to grass court tennis. This is a tough match to call.
1504 Feliciano Lopez, who knocked Tim Henman out of last year's tournament, has beaten Brian Dabul 7-6 (7-1) 3-6 6-3 6-3. It seems odd to be watching Wimbledon without Tiger Tim involved. If you are missing the former British number one, e-mail in to nick.hext@bskyb.com and let me know how you are going to cope during the next two weeks without Tim in action.
1458 Baghdatis has secured his passage into the second round of this year's Championship with a 6-3 6-2 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 victory over Darcis. The 10th seed was a Semi-finalist at SW19 in 2006 and his game is well suited to the green grass of Wimbledon.
1455 Ivanovic has raced into a 2-0 lead in the opening set of her match with de los Rios. Do you think the Serbian will be able to claim glory at SW19 this year? Let me know by sending an e-mail to nick.hext@bskyb.com.
1451 Alex Bogdanovic has taken over from Baltacha on Court 11. The Brit is in action against Italian Simone Bolelli.
1446 Gael Monfils has pulled out of this year's Championship. The 30th seed, who was recently a semi-finalist at the French Open, was due to face Chris Guccione in the first round. If all went to plan it looked like the Frenchman would have met Federer in the final 32.
1444 Juan Carlos Ferrero has wrapped up a 2-6 6-4 6-4 6-4 victory over Sam Querry.
1440 Lleyton Hewitt v Robin Haase will the second match on Court No.1 today. The 2002 Wimbledon champion will be looking to perform well this year in order to raise his current world ranking of 27.
1438 Next up on centre court is women's world number one Ana Ivanovic. The French Open champion will be taking on Rossana de los Rios.
1436 Robin Soderling is the man who will be trying to derail Federer in the second round. The Swede has beaten Kevin Kim 7-5 0-6 6-3 6-4 this afternoon. Soderling lost to Nadal in a thrilling five-setter at SW19 last year and he will now be hoping to cause another of the world's top player's a spot of bother.
1432 Federer has also powered his way into the second round. The defending champion has beaten Hrbaty 6-3 6-2 6-2.
1430 Serena is through. She made much quicker work of the second set of her match with Kanepi to secure a 7-5 6-3 victory. Williams' Estonian opponent produced a battling display and looks set for a decent future in tennis.
1428 Razzano has now tumbled out of this year's tournament. She lost the final set of her match to Rodina 6-4.
1426 Darcis has won the third set of his match against Baghdatis 7-6. However, the Cypriot still leads that match by two sets to one.
1424 The Brit will now take on China's Jie Zheng in the second round. The Court 11 crowd are applauding her as she makes her way out of the arena.
1419 Baltacha has done it! She has won the final set of her match with Kerber 7-5 and she is now crying into an official Wimbledon towel.
1417 Baltacha leads against Kerber 6-5 in the final set. The German is serving and the scores are currently level at 40-40.
1410 Lots of you have been getting in touch with me to give your thoughts on Federer. Kean Pizanni agrees with me, as he thinks the defending champion is still a force to be reckoned with. That view is shared by Baggy from Durban, who writes "Roger Federer is one of the best male players, if not the best, I have seen in my lifetime and I started watching Wimbledon more years ago than I care to remember." Do you agree with the praise Federer is receiving, or are you backing someone else to come out on top this year? Let me know by sending an e-mail to nick.hext@bskyb.com
1408 Federer had taken the second set of his match 6-2. It is only a matter of time before he puts his name in the second round draw.
1406 But Baltacha is still in this match. She raced to a 40-0 lead, however Kerber picked up the next two points to leave the Brit under pressure. Baltacha, however, has guts and won the decisive point game to level the scores at 5-5.
1404 However, Baltacha's opponent Kerber has quickly battled back and is now serving for the match with a 5-4 advantage.
1402 Baltacha has battled back and the brave Brit is now level at 4-4 in the final set of here first round clash.
1401 Juan Carlos Ferrero leads by two sets to one in his first round clash with Sam Querrey. The 21st seed was a quarter-finalist at SW19 in 2007.
1357 Serena has taken the first set of her match with Kanepi 7-5. The opening exchange lasted 46 minutes as the American was made to battle for her advantage.
1354 Virginie Razzano is on the verge of losing to Evgeniya Rodina. The 27th seed took the first set of their clash 6-0, however the Russian has hit back and leads the final set 5-2.
1350 Nicole Vaidisova, the women's 15th seed, has made a quick route through to the second round with a 6-2 6-2 victory over Zuzana Ondraskova. The Czech reached the quarter-finals at SW19 last year before losing to Ana Ivanovic.
1347 Federer has broken Hrbaty twice at the start of the second set to take a 4-0 lead. The first set of Serena Williams' first round match is level at 5-5.
1342 I think it will be hard to back against Federer at SW19 this year. He has looked untroubled by Hrbaty so far today and talk of his demise seems to have been greatly exaggerated. Do you agree with me, or are you tipping the likes of Nadal and Djokovic to be the men's champion at the end of the next two weeks. Get in touch and let me know by sending an e-mail to nick.hext@bskyb.com.
1339 Kerber has broken Baltacha and leads the final set 3-2. It looks like we could be on the verge of losing our first Brit of this year's tournament.
1337 Federer has quickly taken the opening set of his first round clash with Hrbaty 6-3. The defending champion looks like he will be able to wrap up this match with the minimum of fuss.
1336 The first seed of this year's Wimbledon has been knocked out. Dominika Cibulkova, who was seeded 30th in the women's draw, has lost to Jie Zheng of China 6-4 6-3.
1333 Robby Ginepri and 15th seed Fernando Gonzalez have just got their first round match under way on Court 3.
1331 Federer is now one game away from taking the first set of his clash with Hrbaty. He currently leads 5-2.
1329 British hope Elena Baltacha has lost the second set of her match with Anqelique Kerber. That clash is now level at one set apiece. Do you think Baltacha can recover and become the first Brit to progress at this year's tournament? Let me know your view by e-mailing me at nick.hext@bskyb.com.
1326 Urszula Radwanska, the sister of 14th seed Agnieszka, has won her first round match against Klara Zakopalova 6-1 6-4 to set up a possible meeting with Serena Williams in the second round. Serena is currently level at 2-2 in her match on Court No.1.
1322 Federer has been in impressive form at the start of this match. He is now 4-1 ahead in the first set and is looking very comfortable.
1320 Hrbaty has won his first game against Federer, however the defending champion had already broken the Slovakian veteran and now holds a 3-1 lead.
13.18 Baghdatis has taken the second set 6-2 in his first round clash against Darcis. The 10th seed is now two sets ahead and looks like he should be able to quickly wrap up a convincing victory.
13.13 Serena, after a tough first game, has also held her serve to move into a 1-0 lead.
13.08 And the action is under way on both Centre and No.1 Court. Federer has held his serve go 1-0 up.
13.06 Serena Williams is out on No.1 Court. The sixth seed in the women's draw is set to take on Estonian Kaia Kanepi.
13.01 Roger Federer has made his way out onto Centre Court as he prepares to face Dominik Hrbaty. The defending champion is, of course, wearing his now traditional cricket-like sweater as the two players warm-up.
12.58 Nick Hext will be taking over the commentary as the action on the show courts begins - email him your thoughts and comments to nick.hext@bskyb.com
12.57 The first result is in - women's 18th seed Nicole Vaidisova has beaten fellow Czech Zuzana Ondraskova 6-2 6-2.
12.48 Baltacha has taken the opening set 6-3 against Kerber despite losing the first two games in a nervy start.
12.44 Baghdatis, the 10th seed, is a set up on Darcis while Sam Querrey has taken the first set off 21st seed Ferrero.
12.32 My imaginery money is on Rafael Nadal to take the men's singles titles (I'm not bold enough to write off Roger Federer with real money) - the Spaniard begins his campaign tomorrow against Germany's Andreas Beck.
12.21 Jonas Bjorkman has announced that he will retire from professional tennis at the end of the season. The veteran Swede, now 36, reached the semi-finals here two years ago.
12.13 Play is now under way on the outside courts where a number of the lower seeds, including Juan Carlos Ferrero, are in action.
12.12 The weather is great at SW19 and looks set fair for the whole of the first week at least. Hopefully we'll avoid a repeat of last year's scheduling chaos.

11.45 Five-time champion Roger Federer is first up on Centre Court, facing Dominik Hrbaty, while on No.1 Court Serena Williams takes on Kaia Kanepi, with both matches starting at 1pm. Before that, at 12, Marcos Baghdatis meets Steve Darcis on Court 2 and Britain's Elena Baltacha faces Anqelique Kerber on Court 11.
