Cornet and Simon beat Hsieh and Lu in mixed teams cup

France's Alize Cornet and Gilles Simon combined to defeat Taiwan 3-0 on Saturday at the Hopman Cup. Cornet beat Hsieh Su-wei 6-4 6-4 in the women's singles before world number seven Simon gave the French an unassailable 2-0 lead with a 6-3 7-6 (8-6) victory of Lu Yen-hsun. The pair then completed the rout with a 6-4 7-6 (9-7) win in the mixed doubles, saving five set points in the tiebreaker. Italy's mixed team will be next up for the French duo on Tuesday and Simon has revealed his frustration at struggling to close out his match against Lu. "I played great tennis and then when I was 6-3 3-1 up I just lost my concentration and he played better," Simon said. "I'm a little bit lucky because I should have lost the second set." Cornet also struggled to hold her serve in the openeing set of her match against Hsieh and she has no doubt jetlag was a factor. "It's something like 3am in France right now, so I was not in the best of shape," Cornet said. "I felt out of breath at times, but it's nice to get the win." It was the only Saturday match at the mixed teams event. On Sunday, Russia, featuring the brother-sister combination of Marat Safin and Dinara Safina will take on Italy's Flavia Pennetta and Simone Bolelli.
