Keothavong loses in both singles and doubles as Poles come out on top

Great Britain's hopes of playing in the World Group II play-offs came to an end when they were beaten 2-1 by Poland in Tallinn. Nigel Sear's side had come through their round-robin group in the Europe/Africa Group I section without dropping a rubber. Despite taking a 1-0 lead they were unable to maintain their impressive run, defeat in the doubles denying them in the deciding match. They had managed to get off the perfect start when Elena Baltacha recorded a comprehensive 6-4 6-1 victory over Katarzyna Piter. However, British number one Anne Keothavong was unable to follow her team-mate's example, losing to Agnieszka Radwanska in straight sets. The world number nine came out on top courtesy of two tie-breakers, her 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-4) success setting up a thrilling finish to the promotion play-off. Keothavong was again in action but, alongside Sarah Borwell, she was unable to stop the Polish duo of Klaudia Jans and Alicia Rosolska triumphing 7-5 6-3.
