Austrian number one captures her second tour crown

Sybille Bammer claimed just the second title of her career with a 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 triumph over Francesca Schiavone at the WTA ECM Prague Open on Sunday. The 29-year-old Austrian first had to ease past Czech third seed Iveta Benesova 6-0 7-5 in her semi-final carried over from Saturday because of rain. Italian top seed Schiavone ousted unseeded Swiss Timea Bacsinszky 6-2 4-6 7-5, meanwhile, but crucially took two-and-a-half hours to do so. The extra energy she expended took its toll in the final as world number 31 Bammer leapt into a 4-0 lead. Schiavone found her second wind to get back on level terms and force a tie-break, but Bammer went on to succeed 7-4 and then dominated the second set. Bammer maintained her perfect record in finals as a consequence, by following up her win at Pattaya City two years ago with glory.
