ATP Madrid Open: Kei Nishikori, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and John Isner all safely through

Tenth seed Kei Nishikori took just 90 minutes to beat Ivan Dodig as his Mutua Madrid Open campaign got off to a brisk start.

Japanese ace Nishikori, who claimed his first claycourt title in Barcelona eight days ago, raced to a 6-4 6-4 victory as he stormed into the second round on Monday.

Nishikori, who is currently No. 12 in the ATP Rankings, will next challenge wild card Guillermo Garcia-Lopez for a place in the third round.

Garcia-Lopez overcame a second-set slip to see off fellow Spaniard Pablo Andujar 6-2 2-6 6-2.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga extended his perfect against fellow Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin to five matches with a three-set victory to book his place in the second round.

The No 11 seed won 6-3 4-6 6-3 in two hours and 10 minutes and goes on to meet qualifier Santiago Giraldo, a finalist at the Barcelona Open, or former World No 1 Lleyton Hewitt.

Ninth seed John Isner, competing for the first time in four weeks, hit 14 aces and lost only 10 first service points in a 7-6 (10-8) 6-4 victory over qualifier Teymuraz Gabashvili and will now face Philipp Kohlschreiber or lucky loser Marinko Matosevic.

Dominic Thiem, qualifying for his seventh ATP World Tour appearance this year, knocked out Dmitry Tursunov 6-4 6-2.

The 20-year-old Austrian, who has now risen to 70th in the world rankings, will next face third seed Stanislas Wawrinka who is seeking only his second ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title.
