Roger Federer needed only 52 minutes to book his place in the third round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto.
Second-seed Federer cruised past Canada's Peter Polansky 6-2 6-0, who caused a shock in the first round with a win over big-serving Pole Jerzy Janowicz.
Federer admitted his biggest problem was avoiding complacency against a rival he out-matched in all departments.
"You never know when it can shift," Federer said. "You feel a little bit and then you end up losing the match.
"I was happy, I started well and that's always helpful to play more freely. I think I could have served better at times but other than that, already in practice I felt I was moving well.
"Didn't feel so good hitting the ball yet. Wasn't quite getting used to the surface and now the last few days have been much better and I'm happy that in the match it kind of all worked really well.
"For the start of a tournament it's never clear if that's going to be the case. I'm very relieved and just really pleased."
Federer's Swiss compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka had things much harder, but did make it through to the third round with a 4-6 6-3 7-6 win over Frenchman Benoit Paire.
Two Canadians were eliminated as Donald Young defeated Frank Dancevic 5-7 6-0 6-3 and world No 13 Richard Gasquet beat last week's Washington finalist Vasek Pospisil 7-5 7-5. Pospisil, who was treated for a leg problem, later withdrew from the doubles.
Latvian Ernests Gulbis ruthlessly made sure there were no upsets in his match as he refused to relinquish even a single break point in a 6-3 6-4 triumph over Joao Sousa.
Italian 16th seed Fabio Fognini beat Mikhail Youzhny 6-4, 6-3, while Spain's Tommy Robredo stopped German Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3 7-6 (7-3).
Frenchman Gael Monfils beat Radek Stepanek 6-3 7-5.
