Seeds Ernests Gulbis and Pablo Andujar made it through to the quarter-finals of the ATP Malaysian Open on Thursday, but Leonardo Mayer was shocked.
Second seed Gulbis took the first set against Germany’s Philipp Petzschner, who then levelled the match on the tie-break before the Lativan upped his game in the decider to claim a 6-3 6-7 (3-7) 6-1 success.
Spanish seventh seed Andujar was also taken to three sets by Poland’s Michal Przysiezny before prevailing 6-4 6-7 (6-8) 6-3.
Germany’s Benjamin Becker, who had beaten Portuguese sixth seed and defending champion Joao Sousa in the first round, continued his good form, defeating France’s Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-4 7-6 (7-4) to make the last eight.
But third seed Mayer was upset by Jarkko Nieminen, with the Finnish player coming through 7-6 (7-5) 6-4.
