In depth

Verdict

Pocket Reader, a disappointment when fancied for a bumper at Thurles last time after a promising run in a Galway maiden hurdle, looks best of those with experience but this should go to a newcomer. Dermot Weld has his horses in sparkling form and DUC DE SAVOIE can carry on the good work. A winner over a mile on soft ground at Listowel in September, he wasn't beaten far on fast going at Leopardstown the following month and today's conditions should suit. Prince Chaparral looks a big threat as he was in good form throughout the latter part of the Flat season, completing a double at Galway and Tramore in August. His second place in the Leopardstown November Handicap was another fine effort though he'll undoubtedly be better over further than this in time. The filly Instant Pur may fare best of the rest with her allowances.
