Verdict

Solent is the pick over Leo's Lucky Star and Hallhoo, with Active Asset best of the rest. Solent overcame a poor draw in stall one to prevail on his Newmarket debut and on the strength of that was pitched into hot company at Goodwood in the race won by Shamardal. He failed to settle and finished down the field, and still looked far from the finished article when third at Salisbury in September. He was put away to mature, and judged on latest work at home, can put those experiences behind him to make up into a useful sort, perhaps Listed class at least. Hallhoo was described as one of the best youngsters in the yard by Mick Channon, so it was disappointing that he only managed to win one of his five starts. Strangely, being a son of Indian Ridge, he was reported to have been unsuited by the soft ground when only beating one home on his final outing at Newmarket and is perhaps best watched today. Frankie Dettori rides the stable's other runner Active Asset who will be campaigned over further as the season progresses, but a bigger danger today should be Leo's Lucky Star who was outclassed in the Champagne Stakes on fast ground here last autumn. A big horse, he will have come on for his reappearance in the Easter Stakes last week, and can reach the frame, but preference is for Solent.
