In depth

Verdict

An open handicap including last time winners Kayf Aramis, Takafu, Noble Minstrel and Gee Dee Nen, plus the consistent Newnham, and we will take Gee Dee Nen to go in again. Mark Tompkins runner was a fast ground Thirsk scorer over a marathon trip last time, when he had the somewhat unlucky Most Definitely behind him. He hampered that opponent that day, but it did not appear to affect the result and the winner looked to have more in the locker. Kayf Aramis was an impressive winner in a Class 4 York handicap over an extreme trip last week and carries a penalty here. If the rains come then he would still be a serious threat, but with drying ground anticipated he is opposed. Takafu won a 1m 7f Warwick handicap by a short head last time and goes on any ground, but a 5lb rise might find him out, while Newnham is very consistent on the all weather but has never won on turf. Of the remainder Noble Minstrel is another non-turf scorer but he has won on Kempton's polytrack on his last two starts and if the ground is a little quicker than good then that would probably assist in his hat-trick bid, but the one for us here is Gee Dee Nen.
