In depth

Verdict

Hawkeyethenoo is 15lb higher than when successful in this 12 months ago on much softer ground and is probably worth taking on today. Cheveton is best over 5f but Our Jonathan could be interesting after a good third at Doncaster last month, though he's been raised a couple of pounds since. Pastoral Player came back to form at Ffos Las in October and Edinburgh Knight is only a pound higher than when beating Silaah at Lingfield in December, though hasn't shown the same level of form on turf so far. Prime Defender wasn't beaten far behind Genki in a Listed race over C&D last time and is dropped into handicap company for the first time in more than a year but Dandy Nicholls is a master at preparing horses for this type of test and it would be no surprise if one of his four entries carried off the lion's share of the prize money. Wildcat Wizard is gradually easing toward a decent mark and caught the eye at Pontefract last time but the vote goes to DOCOFTHEBAY. He's a similar type to Redford, who did so well for the yard last year, in that he's raced over longer trips so far throughout his career. But the seven-year-old has been showing plenty of speed on the all-weather recently and is ideally placed to arrive late off the pace here in stall 23. The ex-Italian Lui Rei may be best of the rest.
