In depth

Verdict

A cracking sprint which will be difficult to find the winner, for the advantage of the draw seems to change weekly. Last years winner Peruvian Chief is a classy performer, but he does race of a stone higher mark this time round. Runner-up last year was Piccled, who on the book appears to have it all to do with the winner, will be meeting his old rival on 8lbs (taking into account his riders claim) worse terms. He has improved in the meantime, but will need to turn in a personal best if he is to win off this mark. Sundried Tomato is a game and consistent sprinter, but he looks to be in need of a little respite from the handicapper, while Winning Pleasure may find these specialist five-furlong horses taking him along faster than ideal. Both Zarzu and Greenwood come here in decent form and cannot be left out of calculations, but a tentative choice is Maktavish, who bounced back to form last time over course and distance. He had apparently taken time to acclimatize to his new stables at Dunstall Park, but he certainly looked a most improved sprinter last time, and he is taken to win a competitive heat.
