Verdict

There's plenty of dead wood in this maiden and a few more with a little to prove. MATHAAQ may be the successful candidate but the likes of Custody and Alhaque are viable winners. The selection showed little on soft ground on debut but left that form behind when chasing home a useful winner at Kempton. He did hang in the straight having started slowly but he can be expected to improve on that performance. Custody sports blinkers for his reappearance having filled the runner-up's berth on all four starts since debut. This is a belated reappearance but it's interesting that his top yard has persevered and the best of his form marks him down as a leading player. Alhaque made a highly promising start albeit one that didn't live up to his tall reputation. He was tailed off on his final start for Peter Chapple-Hyam and strong support on his debut for new connections could be significant. Bourne is deemed capable of better than he showed last time whilst Starkat showed promise in a lesser race but she could struggle to cope with the best of these and we'll take Mathaaq to open his account.
