Wales have called Ospreys wing Eli Walker into their Rugby World Cup squad as a replacement for Liam Williams.

Walker was named in the original 31-man Wales squad but was released due to injury before the start of the tournament.

The 23-year-old, who was himself a late call-up after Leigh Halfpenny was ruled out, suffered a hamstring injury last month but has now recovered.

Walker has made one appearance for Wales in the 35-21 defeat to Ireland in their warm-up match in Cardiff on August 8.

He will link up with the Wales squad immediately at their Surrey base ahead of Saturday's quarter-final clash with two-time world champions South Africa at Twickenham, although he will not be available for the game.

Assistant coach Rob Howley said: "Eli is not available for selection this weekend. He's just got back over the last injury which he had when we released him. He will be available if needed for the following week."

Wales have suffered a raft of injuries, particularly in their backs, with full-back Halfpenny and scrum-half Rhys Webb both withdrawing before the World Cup started and they have since lost winger Hallam Amos and centres Scott Williams and Cory Allen, as well as Liam Williams who plays at full-back or on the wing.
