Wasps have lost their appeal over the severity of fly-half Jimmy Gopperth's three-week ban for striking Leicester's Mathew Tait.

Gopperth was sent to the sin-bin during the second half of Sunday's Aviva Premiership game at Welford Road after colliding with Tigers back Tait in mid-air as they attempted to catch a kick.

He pleaded guilty to the offence and a suspension was handed down by the Rugby Football Union's disciplinary committee on Wednesday, only for Wasps to appeal against the length of the ban.

A statement from the RFU read: "The appeal by Wasps over the length of the sanction given to Jimmy Gopperth has been dismissed.

"Gopperth received a three week ban by a RFU disciplinary panel on Tuesday night.

"The player pleaded guilty to punching or striking, contrary to law 10.4(a) during the Leicester Tigers vs Wasps game on November 1.
