Bristol Rugby have reached an agreement with the RFU to release Steve Borthwick from his contract so he can join the new England coaching team.

Borthwick was named as Eddie Jones' new forwards coach on Tuesday, only for Bristol to issue a statement insisting the former England coach was still under a long-term contract at the Championship club.

Bristol owner Steve Lansdown criticised the Rugby Football Union for their methods on Friday, labelling them 'totally unprofessional', whilst confirming talks were continuing over a settlement.

And on Saturday the RFU confirmed in a statement: "The RFU and Bristol Rugby have reached an agreement to release Steve Borthwick from his coaching contract."

RFU Chief Executive Ian Ritchie said: "We very much appreciate that our approach for Steve has come at a challenging time for Bristol during the season.

"In such circumstances I thank them for reaching this agreement. I would like to thank in particular the club's Chairman Chris Booy for concluding the matter."

Chris Booy, Bristol Rugby Chairman said: "On behalf of the club we wish Steve Borthwick the very best with England and we are pleased that we can move on and begin the process to recruit a new coach as quickly as possible."
